Note: this page will take a long time to completely load, but you should be able to begin reading while the page loads.

On each reading assignment you have, you must take notes on the essay.  You can use any one of several methods to take notes.   You may read the essay and write out a summary of the essay, you can outline the essay, you can write down impressions as you read the essay, you can make marginal notes and/or underline important passages as in the sample listed below, or you can highlight important passages in each essay.  If you write on the essay, you should find some way to show me your notetaking so that I can give you credit.  You can xerox your notes and send them to me via snail mail at Chris Barkley, English Department, Palomar College, 1140 W. Mission Rd., San Marcos, CA, 92069 or your can scan in your notes (if you have a scanner) and e-mail me the notes as an attachment, or you can type up your notes into an e-mail or send it with an e-mail as an attachment.  If you have other classes on campus, you may stop by my office when I have regular office hours and see me then to show me notes.

I am demonstrating how I take notes with the essay "Examsmanship and the Liberal Arts: a Study in Educational Epistomology."  Your notes need not be this elaborate, but I do expect you to take control of each essay by taking as many and whatever kind of notes you need to thoroughly understand what you have read and to be able to reference certain sections of the essay quickly for your peers during a chat or on the threaded discussions.
