This Week's Work:  Tuesday, February 17

This is week 5 of the spring semester.  You should submit your weekly update by the end of the day today.

Complete the following reading this week:

1.  Two essays for peer review.  See the Peer Review List for Essay 1 for whose essays you should read.

2.  McHenry: Introduction, 1, 2, and 3.

Complete the following writing this week:

1.  Your revised essay 1 is due today.  Upload it directly to the Pluto server at Palomar by ftp.  See the FTP Instructions for how to do this.  Review the format and requirements for revised essays.

2.  Submit your first essay to Safe Assign, through Blackboard, by the end of the day on Wednesday.  See the Instructions for Safe Assign for how to do this.  I recommend that you submit your essay to Safe Assign before you upload the revised version to your Web site.  Examine your originality report.  It may show mistakes that you can easily correct in the essay before uploading it.  Certainly you will want to correct any errors involving the use of quotation marks.

3.  Your essay self-evaluation.  This is due by the end of the day on Thursday.  Remember that your essay is not complete until you have submitted your essay self-evaluation.

4.  Your peer reviews for essay 1.  For the revised essay, you will review two essays from students not in your editorial group.  To see whose essay you should review, check the Peer Review List for Essay 1.  You should complete your peer reviews by Saturday.  The Peer Review List will probably not be available until Wednesday night.  If you check late Wednesday night and Thursday and the link for the Peer Review List is not active, click Refresh to see if it has been recently uploaded.

5.  Discussion of McHenry: Introduction, 1, 2, and 3.  Questions will be posted throughout the week as indicated on the calendar.

Looking Ahead:

The subject area for essay 2 is Thinking and Knowing.  This is just a very general area in which your topic must fall; you should write on a very narrow and specific topic that falls within it.  Do not attempt to cover the whole subject area in your essay.  There is no value in using the words "thinking" and "knowing" in your thesis, or even in your essay, unless they are necessary to make the point you want to make.  I recommend trying to avoid them if possible.  (You are more likely to get closer to your point if you use the verbs "think" or "know" rather than the noun forms "thinking" and "knowing."  But don't use any form of the words unless you need them to express your meaning.)

The four examples in chapter 1 are reasonably sized topics for an essay.  Try to locate a problem or example concerning how people think, solve problems, or decide what they know.  Begin to think of a topic now, so that you can begin to do your outside research as you are reading the McHenry book.  You will need to be doing research to narrow down and support your own topic as you are reading this book.

You should have completed the following reading since last week:
