Make-Believe
C.M. Fortson
The pale sunshine illuminates your face
Finding places I couldn't see
And I'm smiling at how happy you look
Wishing to be apart of that memory
Distant laughter in an empty park
A broken swing curled up in the wood chips
I see you crying farewell to your childhood
As it is buried alive in a baby crib
In the backyard looking at the stars
They have never shone so bright
Floating in the vast darkness of your eyes
And I'm watching your tears take flight
The green grass shows your footsteps in the wood
The fresh smell still under my nose
Lingering like this forgotten place
I remember the gate we left behind to close
I buried my fond thoughts in the sand
My feet carried me far away
I only wish I didn't know what it is like
To carry this shame just one more day
The pale sunshine illuminates your soul
Finding things I couldn't see in you
And I'm smiling at how happy you look
Wishing to be apart of something I never knew
I never knew.
